As advertised, we witnessed the most unique Money in the Bank Ladder Matches in history - let alone the fact that they took place together. However, seeing how the matches went about, it’s clear why WWE chose to have the men and women compete at the same time and ascend the ladder in the same ring to capture the briefcase.
Things are certainly going to get interesting as the two Money in the Bank winners are now guaranteed a World and Women’s Championship opportunity soon. This was also the shortest PPV in a long time, with a run-length of roughly two-and-a-half hours. Without dragging it much further, let’s jump right into it.
#6. Braun Strowman hasn’t broken free just yet
Bray Wyatt vs Braun Strowman didn’t fully deliver as we had hoped. While the two had a history together to make their storyline feel more personal, the match didn’t feel as intense. There was, however, one important spot. It was the one where Strowman put on his Black Sheep mask, seemingly indicating a reunion with Wyatt.
However, he ripped his shirt off and removed the mask before finishing his former faction member, retaining the Universal Championship in the process. While that might have spelled the end of the feud, a moment after the match showed Wyatt having flashes of The Fiend, hinting that the feud isn’t over.
We expect to see ‘The Fiend’ vs Braun Strowman at Backlash and for The Fiend to recapture the Universal Championship. This would mean the end for Strowman in his dream run.
#5. A twist with Otis?
Who would have imagined that in 2020, Otis from Heavy Machinery would become Mr. Money in the Bank? He’s had a lot of momentum this year starting from February, where he got involved in a storyline with Mandy Rose and Dolph Ziggler. It led to a match against Ziggler at WrestleMania, where he won and started an on-screen romance with Rose.
He was arguably the biggest underdog in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, but despite struggling to ascend the ladder at first, he managed to capture the briefcase despite Styles taking it out first.
That was thanks to King Corbin, who tried to snatch it from his hand. Elias came out of nowhere and struck Corbin with a guitar. This entire tug of war led to the briefcase being dropped and caught by Otis, who has won the biggest accolade of his career.
Even though he can go for the Universal Championship, we expect him to do something never done before - cash in for the Tag Team Championship. It was suggested by Otis earlier and this could lead to Heavy Machinery’s first WWE title wins.
#4. A New Day but no new Champions
The opening match of the night saw The New Day defend the SmackDown Tag Team Championship against three teams - The Forgotten Sons, The Miz & John Morrison, and The Lucha House Party.
The New Day were on a two-week skid, having first lost to The Forgotten Sons and then losing to them again when they teamed up with the Lucha House Party. The odds weren’t in their favor for this match, but as we’ve come to know, The New Day are no strangers to adversity.
They used their experience to get through all their opponents and pick up the win at the end to retain the titles. However, what confused us was the fact that Jaxson Ryker got ejected when it was a No DQ match.
The match didn’t deliver as expected in the opening show, but perhaps that may have been different with a live audience. Either way, The New Day’s reign is in jeopardy if Otis decides to cash in the Money in the Bank briefcase on the tag team titles.
#3. What’s the endgame for the Boss n’ Hug connection?
Tamina was never going to beat Bayley. The 10-year veteran might deserve a shot at the gold, but it was never her time and it certainly isn’t now. It’s Bayley’s time and the SmackDown Women’s Champion has been dominant with the title since winning it at Money in the Bank last year, with only a small 4-5 day gap in between where Charlotte Flair won the title from her (before losing it back).
Bayley has faced tougher challenges before, but WWE did a good job of making Tamina seem like a legitimate threat. She was close to winning before Sasha Banks distracted her, eventually leading to Bayley getting a sneaky pinfall for the victory.
Despite all the teases of dissent and a possible break up, the alliance between the two seems to be growing strong. WWE could hold off the rivalry until SummerSlam, but it makes more sense for the two to stick around longer together and wait for a big-money match down the road.
#2. Asuka is money!
Asuka, just like Bayley, is one Championship away from winning all the possible titles in WWE. While Bayley accomplished it a while back, Asuka has been racking up an impressive career in her own right.
She was the longest-reigning NXT Women’s Champion in a single reign and she was also the first Royal Rumble winner in 2018. While her stock dipped in 2018, she ended it on a high by winning the SmackDown women’s Championship.
The last 6-7 months of her career have been more focused on the Women’s Tag Team Championship with Kairi Sane. However, this looks like another major push and it could be Asuka who could be the one to dethrone Becky Lynch.
Becky Lynch has been away from WWE TV for close to a month now but will return on the RAW after Money in the Bank 2020. We expect this to eventually restart the feud between the two later this year. They had a great match at the Royal Rumble and this time around, she could get Lynch again.
#1. What kind of Champion is Drew McIntyre going to be?
Drew McIntyre looks like he’s going to be WWE’s most exciting babyface World Champion in a long time. We’ve seen many babyface Champions who have failed to live up to that spot, with McIntyre’s opponent Seth Rollins suffering that fate last year before turning heel.
This time around, he was the post-WrestleMania challenger and had the best match of the night against Drew McIntyre. It’s the kind of match that would have been over with the crowd, but the two did to make the most out of what they had.
McIntyre won as expected and after the match, he shook Seth Rollins’ hand in a show of respect. Rollins, who debuted a new theme song at Money in the Bank, obliged and seemed overwhelmed, teasing a face turn.
However, it doesn’t make much sense to turn him face at this juncture, particularly when there is a shortage of top heels on RAW. Drew McIntyre was portrayed as a great fighting Champion who isn’t the same as every other babyface. He has an edge about him, something that will benefit him long-term in a big way.
