The boy, who is believed to have special needs, fell after climbing through the window of his family’s Bronx River Houses apartment building near Harrod Avenue and East 174th Street in the Soundview section.

He fell at around 11 a.m. on Saturday after pushing past a piece of cardboard that was duct-taped to the window next by an air conditioning unit, ABC News reported.

The boy, who has not been identified, fell approximately 90 feet before landing on a grass patch outside the apartment complex.

Neighbors of the family told CBS News New York they heard the mother screaming in the immediate aftermath of the fall.

“I heard the mother saying: ‘My boy’s through the window, the window!’” one neighbor said.

After emergency services were called, first-responders reportedly had to get past a construction fence to reach the boy.

The boy suffered several broken bones and internal bleeding, ABC News reported.

“He was screaming,” Jimmy Graham, a neighbor of the family, told the news outlet. “I was upset to see a kid like that. It upsets everybody.”

Norma Saunders, a friend of the family, told WABC News: “They were putting him on the stretcher. It wasn’t a good sight to see.

“You never want to see a child being out on the stretcher. The mother was right by his side along with the sisters.”

Another neighbor, Lessette Betancess, said: “It is tragic. You know, I feel bad for the family and for the kid.”

Once first-responders reached the boy, he was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in East Bronx, where he remains in critical condition. He has already undergone surgery for brain hemorrhaging, ABC News reported.

Norma Saunders, the tenant association president at the Bronx River Houses, told 1010 WINS that the window the boy fell out of had no safety bars because of the AC unit.

“The window that it looks like he fell out of was the window with the AC unit, so you can’t put bars with an AC unit in,” she said.

A statement from New York Police Department to Newsweek said the circumstances around the child’s fall were under investigation.

“On Saturday, November 9, at approximately 10:53 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of an injured child at 1435 Harrod Avenue,” the statement said.

“Upon arrival, responding officers encountered a 7-year-old male unconscious and unresponsive on the side of the location.

“EMS also responded to the scene and transported the male to Jacobi Hospital where he is in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.”

One neighbor told CBS News New York that the boy’s parents were both at home at the time of the incident, but said they were both caring and attentive.
